My family went to Outback Steakhouse last night and I have to say that it was a remarkably enjoyable experience. When I asked the server for a Gluten Free menu, he quickly retrieved one from the hostess stand with no hesitation. And then it started. The fantastic dark brown loaf of bread with butter was brought out. I watched my family enjoy it. And then they had a Bloomin Onion... And I watched as that started to disappear. Ya'll it smelled SO incredibly good.
My husband even said that it wouldn't hurt me to have a bite or two... But the remarkable thing I've found with going Gluten Free is that I don't WANT to cheat. The headaches and nausea and fog... Its just not worth it. And that's saying a lot, cause when it comes to "diets", I have very little will power. But back to my meal!
The Gluten Free menu had a good number of choices on it, from steak to chicken to fish. It was remarkably detailed in that it specified which options, sauces, spices, etc that would normally have come on the entrees, were not Gluten Free. It made ordering pretty straightforward. I got a bacon cheese burger without the bun and substituted a baked sweet potato for the fries (which were not gluten free). The burger was supposed to come with lettuce, tomato, and such, but by the time I started to eat, I just wanted the good stuff. Or... bad stuff, I suppose :-) My food was brought out separately from everyone else's, on a completely different tray, though just a moment before everyone else's. Of course by this time, I was really hungry as I hadn't had the bread and onion to fill me up. It was very very good :-) So overall, it was a smooth experience.
On another note, I've been having sporadic headaches and nausea. The latter comes up mostly at night. Its not the same as my reaction to gluten. It's hard to explain, but I can tell its different. I'm hoping next week's dairy free adventure will help.
