After 2 weeks soy free, I reintroduced it over 3 meals. The first (lunch), a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, (Jif Creamy Peanut Butter with "less than 2%" soy), caused brain fog within 2 hrs of eating. The second (dinner) contained a cheese substitute that was soy based, along with some double chocolate chips cookies into which I mixed soy-based butter substitute. I had a headache before going to bed and a twinge of nausea. The third (lunch the next day; leftovers) caused more headaches and continued brain fog.
At that point, I decided I was going soy-free for real... and then waited out the next 4-days-worth of headaches. Yuck.
(Aside: during my soy-free test, I had my hair cut at a salon and when I checked out, I caught a whiff of something that almost [but not quite] made me nauseous. I looked around for the source and quickly spotted a soy candle burning on the counter. So I'll be staying away from those as well.)
I then put together my box of soy-containing products to give away (Febreeze, Burt's Bees, Neutrogena Naturals, Neutrogena Moistureshine, Physicians Formula foundation and powders, Dawn, Bath and Body Works, amongst others, all bit the dust). Then I shifted all the soy-containing foods in my house over to my husband's shelf in the pantry. Then on to the fun stuff :-)
I started the search for Gluten-Free, Soy-Free makeup. I quickly found a foundation and powder from Juice Beauty that I like very much (I called them and they carefully analyzed each ingredient in each product before recommending the two I ended up buying. I also placed an order with Red Apple Lipstick for 3 lip glosses. I will post a detailed review on all of my makeup choices shortly.
Lastly, I will just say how important it is to check the ingredients on each and every product you buy, no matter what anyone tells you is safe. I visited an Ulta makeup store, whose rep pointed me towards a Smashbox foundation that was supposedly GFSF, even going so far as to check with their product researcher to be sure. I used this product for a week and started breaking out about as much as I had prior to going GF. Then while on the phone with Smashbox for another reason, on a whim I asked them to double check the foundation. They explained that it contained gluten, corn, soy, wheat... The whole shebang. I was beyond pissed, especially when I looked at the ingredient list myself. There, within the first few ingredients was wheat. I should have known better than not to check. On the up-side, Ulta graciously allowed me to return the foundation. Always check for yourself.
